I found out about DJ Zozi during 1080P’s (the Canadian record label) Pay-what-you-want sale. What drew me to this jungle-tinged track was the way that the breaks establish a solid groove with some of the aggressive, forward-moving characteristics of breakbeat taken out. The track still has a lot of drama about it, with a huge variety of trancey/ new beat pad and synth sounds that layer over each other creating a slight sense of melancholy in juxtaposition with the obligatory chopped vocal samples. Despite the variety in synth sounds, the track never feels chaotic or out of control, it maintains a laid-back groove thanks to the drums. When the choral -ooh, ooh- samples come in later on, what could easily be cheesy suddenly doesn’t seem out of place at all.
