Taken from one of my favourite and most emotionally affecting films of recent memory, Victoria, perhaps it isn’t right for me to remove this track from its context. It comes from the soundtrack to the film, orchestrated by composer Nils Frahm and really should be experienced in conjunction with the visuals. After all, the footage for the film was looped in the background for inspiration whilst Nils and his team worked away at this raw piano and string ballad, nestled amongst a bed of gentle tape fizz . Regarding the track itself, I lack the musical education to explain exactly why the chord progression is so moving, but it is, just listen. Music, being the most directly sensuous of artistic media (whose semiotics are the least arbitrary), perhaps loses some of its magic when thrust into the realm of language, this feels especially true of this fragile track.
TIP. Watch the film, if only for the piano scene.
